Anyone studying at IU’s Cologne campus—Germany’s largest university—will now be going in and out of one of the Federal Republic’s largest post-war historic buildings. After three years, Quantum has completed the revitalization of the listed centerpiece of the Gerling Quarter and introduced IU International University as the long-term sole tenant of the “Globale” ensemble on Hildeboldplatz. The university’s new main Cologne location comprises around 4,000 m² of rental space.

Complex revitalization: Gerling’s control center becomes a lecture hall

The previously vacant 1950s office building has been transformed into a modern, future-proof university site with a very special history. As part of the revitalization, the largely listed ensemble was carefully further developed, linking the historic interior structures with IU’s contemporary use.

“The venerable office of Hans Gerling will in future serve as a lecture hall with a unique history. The high ceilings, large windows, and historic wall paneling and lighting have been preserved in the spirit of the original creator. Another highlight: the Venetian Hall with its famous bar—where Hans Gerling welcomed statesmen from around the world—is now a large communication and event space,” says Stephan Pientka, Quantum’s project lead for the revitalization.

Large parts of the 2nd and 3rd floors were completely gutted to create new, modern lecture halls. For university operations, the ensemble was made fully accessible and barrier-free. The designs and planning for the revitalization were provided by Schutte Schwarz Architekten (Wuppertal), with project management by Trapp Architekten (Wuppertal).

By retaining nearly all of the existing structure, the revitalization was particularly resource-efficient. A modern heat recovery system supplies fresh air to lecture halls and offices without the need to open windows—reducing heat loss and optimizing heating requirements. To further save energy, the historic building was comprehensively fitted with LED lighting. The ensemble is targeting the highest DGNB sustainability certification, Platinum.

University opens its doors in the Gerling Quarter

Effective immediately, IU International University is opening its new, tradition-rich premises in the Gerling Quarter, offering not only academic programs but also fascinating insights into the architecture of this insurance empire. Classes began at the end of April. Approximately 2,000 people enrolled across more than 25 degree programs will study at IU’s new main Cologne campus. In addition, around 600 students will use the new “myStudium” format, which offers maximum flexibility. The Gerling Quarter will also provide an extraordinary new workplace steeped in history for around 45 administrative and sales staff as well as over 60 professors, lecturers, and instructors.

Maximum flexibility and a wide range of degree programs

The new myStudium model offers maximum flexibility, aimed especially at working professionals seeking further qualifications. On campus, virtual, or online—myStudium is flexible and location-independent.

In the dual study program, geared primarily toward school leavers and career changers, the combination of three practical days in a company and two study days gives SMEs the opportunity to inspire urgently needed young talent within their own organizations.

This is precisely the essence of IU International University’s concept: collaboration with top-tier corporate partners enables practice-oriented study and helps counteract the shortage of skilled workers. The figures also underscore IU’s success: two out of three students are hired by their practice partners after graduation.

Enrollment in both study models is possible quarterly. With a total of 26 degree programs, there is something for everyone in the following fields:

  • Education & Psychology
  • Health & Social Affairs
  • Business & Management
  • Architecture & Construction
  • Marketing & Communications
  • Design & Media
  • IT & Engineering
  • Human Resources

myStudium expansions from autumn:

  • Fashion Management
  • Sports Management
  • Game Design
