Hamburg, 16/07/2025 | With a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony on 15 July, HanseMerkur Grundvermögen AG officially launched the construction of its new office and commercial complex at Gänsemarkt. Among the approximately 100 invited guests, business partners and neighbours was Hamburg's Senator of Finance, Dr Andreas Dressel.

"It is a great pleasure for us to begin construction at this historic location near our company headquarters on the 150th anniversary of HanseMerkur. Gänsemarkt is firmly rooted in Hamburg's history. It is of outstanding importance in terms of both urban development and culture. As a long-term investor, we want to help shape and revitalise this area in the heart of Hamburg – for the city and its residents," said Eberhard Sautter, CEO of HanseMerkur.

Finance Senator Dr Andreas Dressel: "As the Hamburg Senate, we are delighted that this central and attractive area in Hamburg's city centre is now being revitalised. Together with the new HASPA headquarters, our renovated tax office and the new area near the former Gänsemarktpassage, Gänsemarkt will shine in new splendour!" emphasised Dr Andreas Dressel, Senator of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and President of the Tax Authority, in his speech.

Malte Andes, Deputy Chairman of the Board of HanseMerkur Grundvermögen AG: "For us, Gänsemarkt is much more than just a prime location – it is the heart of the city. We are seeing enormous public interest in the new building, and due to its location and modernity, the space will be in high demand. The Gänsemarkt Höfe combine architectural quality, first-class infrastructure and high sustainability standards."

"We are delighted to be able to contribute our expertise in inner-city developments to this important Hamburg project. The mix of uses and the attractive architecture of the ensemble will revitalise and enrich Gänsemarkt and the adjacent Colonnaden," says Celia-Isabel Vietmeyer, CEO of Quantum.

HanseMerkur Grundvermögen AG took over the project development, which had been at a standstill since October 2023, at the beginning of the year and plans to complete construction by mid-2028. The Hamburg-based project developer Quantum was commissioned to realise the construction project on the site of the former Gänsemarktpassage.

The new building, with a total rental area of around 20,700 m², is being constructed in a prime city centre location in the immediate vicinity of the Hamburg State Opera and Jungfernstieg. The plans call for an eight-storey new building with spacious inner courtyards and passageways to the Colonnaden promenade, as well as a lively restaurant and retail scene.

The project development at Gänsemarkt is part of HanseMerkur Grundvermögen's growing portfolio and fits seamlessly into a series of other current project developments in prime city centre locations in major German cities. It was acquired for one of its investment vehicles, in which other institutional investors can also participate. HanseMerkur Grundvermögen already manages real estate assets for more than 70 institutional investors, including pension funds, insurance companies, banks, savings banks, foundations and family offices.
