Differentiated building volumes with projections and recesses, combined with alternating rendered and clinker façades, create a high degree of individuality and the sense of a well-established neighbourhood.
Particular emphasis was placed on the design of the outdoor spaces within the car-free development. Alongside extensive greenery, the aim was to create areas with different qualities, providing both space for social interaction and the necessary room for retreat. The development was based on an urban planning competition, which was won by the design submitted by Hamburg-based architectural practice Loosen, Rüschoff + Winkler (LRW).
The 35,700 sq m site is divided into five development plots, which were built in successive construction phases by the architectural practices LRW Architekten, KBNK, Schenk Fleischhaker Architekten and msm meyer schmitz-morkramer.
Individual, modern, liveable.
The existing sports facility on Lokstedter Steindamm was modernised. With two football pitches, a hockey pitch and several beach volleyball courts, it was transformed into a high-quality sports centre. To give even the youngest children early access to sport, a sports nursery with 120 places was established on development plot 1.
The Stadtgärten development includes both owner-occupied and rented apartments of various sizes. The concept places a particular focus on homes for families. Every apartment has a terrace, garden or balcony.
A total of 600 modern residential units meeting contemporary energy standards were created on the site, which is close to the city centre and located between Grandweg, Veilchenweg and Lokstedter Steindamm.
Jörn Walter, Chief Building Director of the City of Hamburg, described Stadtgärten as a key project for Hamburg. The development is regarded as one of the city’s largest construction projects of the past 25 years.
