At Cologne’s Friesenplatz, the CENTRAL CROSS is being developed in a prime location and will offer state-of-the-art office and retail space across 12 storeys by the end of 2026. The long-vacant 1960s high-rise on Hohenzollernring is undergoing comprehensive refurbishment in line with the highest sustainability standards and will be complemented by newly built areas. In this process, large parts of the existing building’s original structure will be retained and reused.

Planning permission was granted in April 2023. The revitalisation is based on designs by kadawittfeldarchitektur. A DGNB Gold certification from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) is being sought.

A combination of photovoltaics, waste heat recovery and a state-of-the-art building envelope helps to increase independence from energy suppliers while optimising operating costs and reducing CO2 emissions.

The existing façade will be replaced by an elegant double-skin glass façade which, thanks to its enhanced acoustic insulation, will provide a quiet and undisturbed working environment. A landscaped courtyard and terraces will help to improve the microclimate, capture fine particulate matter, cool the surrounding area and promote biodiversity. At the same time, they will provide employees with outdoor spaces for communication.

As a key component of the mobility concept, a dedicated bike park with around 220 bicycle parking spaces will be created, with direct access to the cycle street on Friesenwall.
