Bavaria Quartier

Hamburg

In 2002, Quantum, together with the Fraatz/Bartels families, HSH Nordbank and Hansa Baugenossenschaft, launched a competition with the aim of giving the derelict site of the Bavaria Brewery in Hamburg’s St. Pauli district a use befitting its central, well-connected location. The 29,000 m² site was to be transformed into a multifunctional urban district comprising housing, offices, restaurants, bars, shops, a hotel and an experiential brewery.

The entire site was divided into five development plots, for which invited competitions were held with a high-calibre field of participants. David Chipperfield, Jörg Friedrich, Mecanoo, Steidle und Partner, Störmer Murphy and Partners GbR, Axthelm Frinken Architekten and Herzog und Partner emerged as the winners. In recognition of the project’s outstanding quality, Quantum received the DIFA Award in 2002.
