# Gerling Quartier

### Cologne

The Gerling Quartier in Cologne is a significant listed ensemble dating from the economic miracle of the 1950s and 1960s. The office buildings of the so-called “Südspange” were constructed in the early 1960s as the final addition to the Gerling Quartier, based on plans by architects F. H. Sobotka and G. Müller, with the involvement of Arno Breker. The buildings are located in the heart of Cologne’s vibrant urban district, on Im Klapperhof and the adjoining Hildeboldplatz and Spiesergasse.

The historic “Rundbau” at the centre of the block was refurbished several years ago. The 25hours Hotel “The Circle” opened in 2018, and the underground car park beneath the buildings was also completed in 2018.

The listed buildings flanking the complex to the east and west, extending as far as Hildeboldplatz and Spiesergasse, have likewise been refurbished and converted into office and commercial buildings. The three- to four-storey buildings were extended by two or three recessed storeys, creating generous roof terraces for the office space. The existing building on the corner of Spiesergasse was also supplemented by a directly adjoining five-storey new-build.

## New life in the Gerling Quartier

Careful refurbishment, new construction and redesign of the listed buildings have created centrally located spaces for working, communication and recreation, as well as retail and exhibition space.
