Hamburg, 28 September 2026 – HanseMerkur Grundvermögen AG (HMG), together with its project partner Quantum, held a ceremony to mark the laying of the foundation stone for the Gänsemarkt Höfe. Around 100 invited guests from the worlds of politics, public administration, business, the property sector, the local community and the planning and construction team gathered on the foundation slab of the office and retail complex currently under construction, including Hamburg’s Senator for Finance, Dr Andreas Dressel. Following the official start of construction in July 2025, the laying of the foundation stone marks another important milestone for this prominent city centre project.

Following the ceremonial speeches, a traditional time capsule was embedded in the wall. In addition to current newspapers and coins, it contains information about the construction and the developer, to give future generations an impression of the era in which the Gänsemarkt Höfe were built.

Eberhard Sautter, Chairman of the Executive Board at HanseMerkur, explains: “The Gänsemarkt Höfe are a very special project for HanseMerkur. Located just a few steps from our corporate headquarters, they symbolise our deep connection to Hamburg. A new, vibrant part of the city centre is taking shape here, combining work, shopping, dining and socialising. Through our commitment, we are taking responsibility for a place that will shape the image of our home city for many decades to come.”

Hamburg’s Senator for Finance, Dr Andreas Dressel, emphasises: “The Gänsemarkt Höfe demonstrate how private investment can create tangible added value for Hamburg’s city centre. The fact that this ambitious construction project is progressing reliably sends a positive signal for Hamburg as a business location and for the further development of our city centre. We look forward to being good neighbours once we return to our then newly refurbished headquarters on Gänsemarkt! ”

Malte Andes, Deputy Chairman of the Board at HanseMerkur Grundvermögen AG, says: “We are delighted that construction is progressing according to plan. In a prime location on Gänsemarkt, a premium property is now taking shape for all to see, combining high-quality architecture, excellent infrastructure and responsible urban planning.”

Philipp Schmitz-Morkramer, Member of the Executive Board of Quantum Immobilien AG, says: “With the laying of the foundation stone, the Gänsemarkt Höfe are now taking shape. A new space is emerging here in the heart of Hamburg that will enrich the city centre. Together with HanseMerkur Grundvermögen and all those involved in the project, we are implementing this significant undertaking with great care and to the highest quality standards.”

A modern office and retail complex is being built on the site of the former Gänsemarktpassage. Spacious courtyards and passageways are designed to link the complex with the historic colonnades and its urban surroundings. The plans include high-quality retail and catering spaces, as well as flexible office space. Terraces and communal areas are intended to enhance the experience for future users. The project aims to meet high sustainability standards.

HanseMerkur Grundvermögen took over the previously stalled project development in early 2025 and subsequently commissioned Quantum to carry out the work. The official start of construction was celebrated with a symbolic ground-breaking ceremony on 15 July 2025. Completion is scheduled for the end of 2028.

The project development at Gänsemarkt was acquired by HanseMerkur Grundvermögen for one of its investment vehicles, in which third-party institutional investors can also participate. In total, HanseMerkur Grundvermögen manages property assets on behalf of more than 70 institutional investors, including pension schemes, pension funds, insurance companies, banks, savings banks, foundations and family offices.
